New Photo Section

For those of you that didn’t know, I’ve recently launched a new photo section here on ahills.com. I was shooting for something minimal and supportive to the the medium. That’s why I went with the dark background. I find that a bright screen with a white background can tire your eyes when looking at photos (of course when you’re reading text, dark on light tends to be easier). A dark background allows your eyes to relax and causes the photos to pop a bit more. I also wanted the option to display different sets of photos in different templates.  I chose to use indexhibit as the back-end as it comes with a number of different gallery templates including thickbox, slideshow, and horizontal.  I tweaked the horizontal template a bit (I really like the side-to-side storyboard presentation–it’s very much like walking through a gallery space) by adding in some previous and back buttons.  Usability tests have shown that people don’t really get the whole horizontal scrollbar thing and would much rather click on a static button to advance.

I hope that you enjoy the photos.  Please let me know what you think or if you run into any bugs.

2 Gallons of Purple Stuff

Just thought I’d let you all know that I’ve launched an “official” Purple Stuff website here: purplestuff.ahills.com.  It’s nothing too fancy since we don’t really have that much to share right now but as we have more it’ll be showing up there.

Abacus - SCOPE Art Fair - Lincoln Center - 3.5.2009

Abacus, the math-rock-jazz-classical group led by Mike Kammers, will be playing at the SCOPE Art Fair on Thursday, March 5, 2009.  It’s happening at Damrosch Park (62nd Street and Amsterdam) in Manhattan.  We go on at 7 pm and play until 7:40.

The SCOPE Art Fair looks pretty sweet so be sure to leave some time to wander around and look at the other art.

Check out a clip from our show at Barbès.

Abacus is…

Mike Kammers: saxophones, keyboards, compositions
JP Gilbert: guitar
Greg Chudzik: bass
Tim Monaghan: drums
Alex Hills: keyboards
